US-Pakistan PhD Scholarship 2027: Unlock Your Dream of Studying in the USA

About the Scholarship

If you don't already hold a PhD offer from a top-100 US university, 30 October is not your deadline. Yours is 30 March 2027, and the next five months decide whether you make it.

Quick answer: The US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor PhD Scholarship is an HEC award for Pakistani and AJK nationals who already hold PhD admission at a top-100 QS-ranked US university. It pays a USD 19,200 yearly stipend, USD 2,000 in health insurance, and full or capped tuition. Apply by 30 October 2026 (Spring/Summer 2027) or 30 March 2027 (Fall 2027).

That's the short version. The long version has two traps most guides skip: a HAT result that lands more than two weeks after the October deadline, and a Category II tuition cap that rarely covers a real US fee bill. Both are below.

Last checked against HEC's official pages on 20 October 2026.

The 2027 round at a glance

Applications are open. Here is everything you need on one screen, taken from HEC's programme page, its eligibility page and the 2027 advertisement as reported by The Nation.

What does the scholarship actually pay?

The stipend and insurance are identical in both categories. Only tuition changes.

Item Category I (QS 1 to 50) Category II (QS 51 to 100)
Tuition As per university invoice Up to USD 12,000 a year
Stipend USD 19,200 a year USD 19,200 a year
Health insurance USD 2,000 a year USD 2,000 a year

Sources: The Nation, July 2026; HEC FAQ.

USD 19,200 a year works out to USD 1,600 a month. That figure is flat. It's the same in a small college town as in Boston or New York. [YOUR EXAMPLE: what a Pakistani PhD student you know pays in rent in their US city, to show what USD 1,600 really covers]

If another site quotes USD 19,000, or a "USD 1,600 to 1,900 monthly" range, it's wrong. The 2027 figure is USD 19,200.

The Category II gap nobody does the maths on

Category II pays tuition only up to USD 12,000 a year. Many US PhD programmes charge far more than that. HEC's 2027 advertisement itself tells applicants to arrange university funding to cover the difference.

So here's my rule. Treat a Category II offer as workable only if the university also gives you a tuition waiver or an assistantship. Without one, you owe the gap yourself, every single year of the PhD.

One more line item to confirm. HEC's FAQ page lists return airfare of PKR 250,000 in both categories. That page is older, and the 2027 announcements we found don't mention airfare at all. Ask HEC before you count on it.

"Top 50" means top 50 in the world, not in America

HEC's wording is "top 50 QS World Ranked US University." Read it slowly. It means a US university whose position in the world QS ranking is between 1 and 50. It does not mean the 50 best universities inside the United States.

That makes the eligible list much shorter than most students assume. A university can be a strong, well-known American school and still sit outside the world's top 100.

How to check yours in two minutes:

  1. Open the QS World University Rankings 2027 (the latest edition, which HEC says it will use).
  2. Filter by country: United States.
  3. Note each university's world position, not its position in the filtered list.
  4. Use the overall ranking. HEC's current programme page specifies overall ranking for Category II, so a subject ranking won't get you in.

Why you keep seeing "51 to 300"

Because HEC's own FAQ page still says it. That page describes Category II as QS 51 to 300, lets subject rankings count, and still talks about Spring 2023 dates. Older rounds also had a "Category III" for tuition-waiver admissions.

None of that applies to 2027. The eligibility page and programme page both say 51 to 100, overall ranking. Go with those. Any site still quoting 300 or Category III is copying an old round.

The admission letter comes first: a Fall 2027 plan that works

This is not a route into a US university. HEC pays for a seat you've already won. So the hard part, getting into a top-100 US PhD, happens before you ever touch the HEC portal.

Work backwards from 30 March 2027:

When What to do
Now to end of November 2026 Shortlist PhD programmes at QS 1 to 100 US universities. Email potential supervisors. Register for the GRE or the December HAT
December 2026 to January 2027 Submit your US PhD applications. Many programmes close in this window, so check each one's own date
13 December 2026 Sit the HAT, if that's your test
February to March 2027 Interviews and offers. Ask every department about tuition waivers and assistantships
By 30 March 2027 Submit the HEC application with your admission letter

Now the awkward gap. Some US offers arrive late, after 30 March. If yours is still pending in the last week of March, email pmu@hec.gov.pk before the deadline and ask how HEC treats a pending admission. Don't guess, and don't sit waiting while the date passes.

[YOUR EXAMPLE: a student you've helped whose US offer came late, or who booked the GRE or HAT too close to the deadline]

You'll need a clean academic CV for every one of those applications. Our free CV maker has templates you can adapt, and the CV analyzer will flag weak spots before a professor sees it.

Six mistakes that sink Knowledge Corridor applications

Every one of these is avoidable, and every one is final once you've submitted.

  • Applying with an MS or "MS leading to PhD" offer. HEC funds the PhD only. If your US letter says master's first, it doesn't qualify.
  • Using the wrong ranking. A "best US universities" list or a subject ranking isn't the test. HEC uses the QS World Ranking, overall.
  • Forgetting an old second division. Matric counts. Intermediate counts.
  • Treating Category II as fully funded. Without a university waiver or assistantship, a USD 12,000 cap leaves you paying the rest.
  • Sending the form by email or post instead of the portal. The portal is the application. Email is only for the supporting scans HEC asks for.
  • Trusting an outdated page. If it says 51 to 300, "Category III" or USD 19,000, close the tab.

What to do this week

If you hold a Spring or Summer 2027 PhD admission and a valid GRE or HAT score: submit on the portal before 30 October. Don't leave it to the final day.

Everyone else, which is most of you: you're applying in March, and this week's work decides it. Pull out every certificate from Matric onwards and confirm there's no second or third division.

  1. Open QS 2027, filter to the United States, and list ten universities ranked 1 to 100 in the world that offer a PhD in your field.
  2. Book the GRE, or register for the December HAT before registration closes.
  3. Email two potential supervisors with a short, specific research interest.
  4. Add 30 March 2027 to the CareersOz deadline calendar.

Keep a backup running in parallel. A US PhD is one route, not the only one. Browse our PhD scholarships list, or look at HEC's Split PhD programme in France and the France Excellence Eiffel scholarship. For PhD study inside Pakistan, see the Quaid-e-Azam Memorial Fellowship.

Start with step 1 tonight. It takes ten minutes, and it tells you whether the other four are worth your money.

Eligibility

Do you qualify? The eligibility checklist

You need every item on this list, not most of them. Taken from HEC's eligibility criteria:

  • Pakistani or AJK national
  • At least a 4-year bachelor's (BS, BSc, BE) or 16 years of formal education
  • No second or third division anywhere in your academic career
  • Age on the closing date: 35 or under, or 40 or under for regular government employees, regular faculty of public-sector universities and government colleges, and regular researchers of approved R&D organisations
  • Not availing any other scholarship
  • Not already holding a PhD
  • Admission to a PhD (not a master's) at a US university ranked 1 to 100 in QS
  • GRE General 300 or more, or HAT 60% or more

A master's degree is not required. HEC's FAQ says a 4-year bachelor's is acceptable, since many US graduate schools admit straight from BS into a PhD.

The division rule quietly ends more applications than anything else. "Entire academic career" means Matric and Intermediate too. One second division from years ago rules you out, however strong your BS result. Check every certificate before you spend money on a GRE.

IELTS and TOEFL: HEC doesn't ask for either. Your US university probably will, but that's an admissions rule, not an HEC one. If you want options with no English test at all, browse our scholarships without IELTS.

"Any other scholarship" and university funding: HEC's own 2027 advert tells Category II applicants to get university funding for the tuition gap. So a university tuition waiver or assistantship is clearly expected, not banned. What you can't do is hold this award alongside a second stipend scholarship. If your offer is unusual, email pmu@hec.gov.pk and get the answer in writing.

The 40-year lever: the higher age limit applies only to regular (not contract or visiting) government staff, public-sector faculty and R&D researchers. If you were already eyeing lecturer jobs at a public university, a regular post also buys you five more years of eligibility for this scheme.

GRE 300 or HAT 60%: which test, and when?

HEC accepts either one, for both categories. The real question is timing.

The next HAT is on 25 October 2026. Its result is scheduled for 16 November 2026, according to HEC's revised 2026 test calendar. That's two and a half weeks after the 30 October deadline. If you're aiming at the October round without a valid score already, HAT can't rescue you this time.

For the March round, the calendar works in your favour. The same HEC calendar lists another HAT on 13 December 2026, with results by 31 December 2026 and registration closing around 22 November. Confirm those dates on the HEC ETC page before you plan around them. [INTERNAL LINK: HEC HAT test registration and syllabus guide]

Which test should you actually take?

  • Your target US programmes require the GRE: take the GRE. One score, two uses: admission and HEC.
  • They've dropped the GRE (some programmes have): take HAT. It's taken in Pakistan and it satisfies HEC.
  • You already have a GRE under 300: don't retake it just for HEC. A HAT at 60% does the same job.

HEC also runs subsidised GRE training under this programme's "Talent Farming" component, which its programme page says aims to train about 1,000 applicants a year. The 2026 training intake closed on 20 June 2026. Watch for the next one.

Required Documents

Documents to gather before you open the form

Most guides skip this list, but HEC's FAQ spells it out. These are the minimum HEC needs to issue your Provisional Award Letter (PAL), the step after selection. Collect them now so a shortlist email doesn't turn into a panic:

  • US admission letter, plus a tuition waiver letter if you have one
  • Copies of all academic documents, attested by a gazetted officer
  • Copies of CNIC, domicile and passport, attested by a gazetted officer
  • Email addresses of your US graduate school and your advisor or supervisor
  • Employment or experience certificate, where required (for example, if you're claiming the 40-year age limit)
  • Your GRE or HAT score report

No passport yet? Apply this week. After selection you still need an award letter, an I-20 and a US visa appointment, and every one of them needs a passport. It's the one delay you can remove today. [YOUR EXAMPLE: the passport wait time you've seen recently in your city]

Will your subject get priority?

HEC prefers applicants admitted in its priority fields, as Dunya News reported from the 2027 announcement. Other subjects aren't banned. They simply start behind.

The official priority subject list is marked effective for Fall 2025, Spring/Summer 2026 and Fall 2026. We couldn't find a separate 2027 list, so treat this one as the working guide:

Broad area Examples from HEC's list
Engineering and Technology Water management, sustainable energy, climate change and environmental engineering, chemical engineering, software engineering, computer science and IT, AI and robotics, urban planning
Life Sciences and Medicine Crop production, soil and environmental sciences, bioinformatics, medical biotechnology, cancer biology, pharmacology, industrial biotechnology
Social Sciences and Management Rural development, urban planning, education, public policy, sustainable energy
Arts and Humanities Creative art and design
Natural Sciences Listed as a broad area, no specific fields named

Application Process

How to apply on the HEC scholarship portal

The whole application runs through scholarship.hec.gov.pk. HEC has said applications sent any other way won't be considered. These steps follow HEC's How to Apply page:

  1. Open scholarship.hec.gov.pk and click Register.
  2. Enter your CNIC number without dashes as your User ID, and choose a password.
  3. Verify your mobile number with the code HEC sends. HEC's page says ported numbers aren't supported, so use a number that has never switched networks.
  4. Enter your email address and verify it with the second code.
  5. Sign in and complete your online profile, one section at a time.
  6. In the left menu, click Scholarships and Grants, then US-PAK Knowledge Corridor Application.
  7. Fill in the form, upload what it asks for and submit before your round closes.

Two details from the same HEC page. First, it asks applicants to email scanned copies of the application form and documents to pmu@hec.gov.pk. If the current advertisement repeats that, do it the same day you submit. Second, you don't need HEC-attested documents at this stage. Only shortlisted candidates are asked for them later.

Important Dates

Which deadline is yours: 30 October or 30 March?

Pick by your US start date, not by whichever date is closer.

The 30 October 2026 round is for a PhD starting in Spring or Summer 2027. The 30 March 2027 round is for a Fall 2027 start, as both The Nation and UET's admissions notice confirm. Most US PhD programmes admit students in the fall, so most readers of this page belong in the March round.

Today, 20 October, the October round has ten days left. Apply in it only if you already hold a Spring or Summer 2027 PhD admission and a valid GRE or HAT score. Missing either? Don't rush a half-ready form. Prepare properly for March.

There is one exception, and it's about age.

HEC checks your age on the closing date of the round you apply in (eligibility page). If you will cross the limit (35, or 40 for government and faculty applicants) between 30 October and 30 March, the October round is your last chance in this cycle. Check your CNIC date of birth against both dates tonight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last date for the US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor scholarship? +

30 October 2026 for a Spring or Summer 2027 start, and 30 March 2027 for a Fall 2027 start. Apply in the round that matches your US admission.

Can I apply before I get admission to a US university? +

No. Both categories require PhD admission at a QS top-100 US university at the time you apply. Get the offer first.

Is IELTS or TOEFL required for the HEC Knowledge Corridor scholarship? +

Not by HEC. Its FAQ says you can apply without either score. Your US university will usually set its own English requirement for admission.

Can I apply with a 4-year BS and no MS or MPhil? +

Yes. HEC accepts 16 years of education, and many US graduate schools admit BS holders directly into PhD programmes.

Is HAT accepted instead of GRE? +

Yes. A HAT score of 60% or more counts the same as a GRE General score of 300. Watch the result dates: the 25 October 2026 HAT result comes after the October deadline.

How much is the monthly stipend? +

USD 1,600 a month (USD 19,200 a year), the same in both categories and in every US city. Health insurance of USD 2,000 a year is paid on top.

Does the scholarship cover MS leading to PhD? +

No. The 2027 announcement limits it to PhD programmes only.

Which US universities are eligible? +

Any US university ranked 1 to 100 in the latest QS World University Rankings, using the overall world position. Ranks 1 to 50 fall in Category I, ranks 51 to 100 in Category II.

I applied in an earlier round. Do I need to apply again? +

Yes. HEC's FAQ says a fresh application is required.

Do I have to return to Pakistan after the PhD? +

Plan on it. The programme exists to bring trained researchers back, and earlier rounds asked scholars to commit to serving in Pakistan. The exact terms will be in your award letter, so read that before signing.

Is this the same as the HEC Overseas Scholarship? +

o. The Knowledge Corridor is a separate HEC scheme for US PhDs only, and it funds students who already hold admission. See all current HEC scholarships for the other schemes.
