Yes, Pakistani students can apply. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027/28 pays the full cost of a PhD, MLitt or eligible one-year master's at the University of Cambridge for citizens of any country outside the UK. For applicants outside the US, the deadline is 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027 at 11:59pm UK time (4:59am the next morning in Pakistan), depending on your course. You apply through Cambridge's normal postgraduate application, answer four Gates questions and add a Gates reference. Around 70 scholarships are awarded each year.
Below you'll find what the award pays, who qualifies, every date in Pakistan time, and how to write the four short answers that decide between shortlisted candidates.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a full-cost postgraduate scholarship at the University of Cambridge for citizens of any country outside the UK. It is run by the Gates Cambridge Trust, funded by a US$210 million gift from the Gates Foundation, and awarded for academic excellence, a strong reason for your chosen course, a commitment to improving the lives of others and leadership potential.
The gift was made in October 2000, and the first Scholars arrived a year later. About 250 Gates Scholars are at Cambridge at any one time, and the alumni community numbers more than 1,700 people from 116 countries (Gates Cambridge).
One thing to clear up: Gates Cambridge is not "The Gates Scholarship", a separate programme for students in the United States starting undergraduate degrees. Gates Cambridge is postgraduate only, and you can hold it only at Cambridge.
Yes. The Gates Cambridge Trust says the scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge, and it offers optional extra funding on top (Gates Cambridge).
| What's covered | What you get |
|---|---|
| University Composition Fee | Paid in full at your fee rate. This is Cambridge's tuition fee |
| Maintenance allowance | £23,152 for 12 months at the 2026-27 rate; paid pro rata for shorter courses; up to 4 years for a PhD |
| Flights | One economy single airfare at the start of your course and one at the end |
| Visa and health | Inbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge, which gives you access to the NHS |
"Pro rata" simply means a course shorter than 12 months gets a proportionally smaller allowance. The Trust quotes the 2026-27 rate, so the figure for students starting in October 2027 may be updated before you arrive.
These are discretionary: you apply for them once you're a Scholar, and the Trust decides case by case.
| Extra funding | Amount or rule |
|---|---|
| Academic development | £750 to £4,000 depending on course length, for conferences and courses |
| Dependent Children Allowance | Up to £12,793 a year for one child, or up to £18,244 for two or more |
| PhD fieldwork | Keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on approved fieldwork |
| Parental leave | Pause your studies for up to 6 months and keep your maintenance allowance |
| Hardship | Help with unforeseen difficulties |
Not covered: bench fees, scientific equipment and similar course costs (your department is expected to meet these), fieldwork expenses beyond your living allowance, and any support for a partner or spouse. Gates also doesn't pay the Cambridge application fee.
If an employer keeps paying you, or you win another substantial scholarship, the Trust can reduce or stop your standard maintenance allowance. If a public body such as UKRI offers to pay your fees, you're expected to accept it, and Gates may then share costs with that funder. You can hold Gates alongside another award, just not two payments for the same thing, so tell the Trust as soon as other funding comes through (Gates Cambridge FAQ).
There are two rounds. The US round, for US citizens living in the US, closed on 14 October 2026. Everyone else, including applicants in Pakistan, is in the international round, which has two possible deadlines (Gates Cambridge timeline).
Your deadline is your course's funding deadline, not a date you choose. Open your course in the Cambridge Course Directory and find the funding deadline in the panel on the right. By 11:59pm UK time that day, everything must be in: your application, supporting documents and all three references.
The UK is on GMT in December and January, five hours behind Pakistan, so 11:59pm in Cambridge is 4:59am the next morning in Lahore or Karachi. Don't count on those five hours. Give your referees the UK date, and aim to submit days early.
| Stage | Date (UK time, with Pakistan time where it matters) |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 11 September 2026 |
| Deadline for "December" courses | Tuesday 8 December 2026, 11:59pm UK (4:59am Wednesday 9 December in Pakistan) |
| Deadline for "January" courses | Wednesday 6 January 2027, 11:59pm UK (4:59am Thursday 7 January in Pakistan) |
| Departmental ranking | December 2026 to February 2027 |
| Everyone told whether they're shortlisted | By Monday 8 March 2027, 11:59pm UK (4:59am Tuesday 9 March in Pakistan) |
| Interview panels | Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 March 2027 |
| Scholarships offered | By early April 2027 |
| Accept your offer | Within 72 hours |
The two deadlines are the only dates you control. After that, the process runs on Cambridge's timetable.
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is hard to win, but the route is clear. Pick an eligible course, find your real deadline, give your referees time, and put most of your effort into four short answers that show what you've already done and why Cambridge is the next step. Start this week by confirming your course's funding deadline.

There's no separate Gates form. You apply for your Cambridge course and for Gates funding in one application, and the Trust sees the whole thing when it reviews you (Gates Cambridge: how to apply).
Write your CV and answers yourself. Cambridge does not allow AI tools to be used for personal statements or CVs, even just to polish your English, and invented claims are treated as application fraud (Cambridge guidance on AI). For layout, our free CV Maker has clean templates you can fill in with your own words.
Cambridge charges £20 per applicant per entry year for doctoral courses and £85 per application for other postgraduate courses. Pakistan isn't on the automatic fee-waiver list, and Gates doesn't cover the fee. You pay online by Visa or Mastercard (not American Express), with a 14-day cancellation window (Cambridge application fee). You can make up to seven applications in a cycle, and each one needs its own Gates section if you want Gates funding for it.
Your department decides whether you're nominated. Among nominees, Gates uses these four answers, plus your Gates reference, to tell candidates apart. It's the only part of the form that asks directly how you fit the scholarship (Gates Cambridge: how to apply).
The limits are in characters, so check the character count, not only the words. The examples below are illustrations, not real applicants.
What it tests: proof that you're academically outstanding beyond your grades, such as class rank, research, prizes or hard problems you solved.
What it tests: that you've researched the course and that it leads somewhere specific in your plans.
What it tests: a track record, not an intention. Gates lets you define this yourself, across your past, present and future.
What it tests: whether you've started change or brought people together to reach a goal, and how that will matter later.
Pro tip: Make the four answers point the same way. The strongest sets read as one story: what you've done, why this course is the next step, and what you'll do with it. One deep example per answer beats a list of five.
On top of your two academic references, you need a third reference written specifically about the Gates criteria. Gates uses it the same way as your four answers: to choose between nominated candidates (Gates Cambridge: how to apply).
Pro tip: Send your referee a one-page brief: the four criteria, two or three specific examples you'd like them to confirm, the comparison group you'd suggest ("top 5 of the 200 students I've taught"), and your deadline in UK time. A referee who has the criteria in front of them writes a far more useful reference.
Gates Cambridge selects in two stages, and the first one happens inside your department (Gates Cambridge: how we select).
Gates offers one night's accommodation if you interview in person, but it doesn't pay for flights from Pakistan, so the online interview will be the practical choice for many Pakistani candidates. If you're nominated for more than one course, you're interviewed once, for the course you pick.
The panel's questions fall into four parts: an introduction; Gates Cambridge itself (what you know about it, why you applied, the responsibilities a full-cost award brings); your academic and career plans (your work so far, why this course, how it links to your career); and a chance for your final thoughts or questions. Expect at least one probing intellectual or ethical question with no single right answer. Cambridge also says AI must not be used to help you during any interview.
Practise out loud with questions like these:
Gates doesn't give feedback to unsuccessful candidates, and an unsuccessful application doesn't count against you if you apply again later. For broader practice, see our interview preparation guides.
The rules are the same for every nationality, but a few practical details matter more if you're applying from Pakistan.
Once you win and accept, Gates pays your tuition, living allowance, one flight each way, visa and health surcharge.
Gates is only one door. The same funding section and funding deadline are how you're considered for Cambridge Trust scholarships. Most of those look for academic merit plus financial need, and you must have a conditional offer of admission. Some Trust awards are reserved for particular nationalities, and some partner awards need a separate application to the partner. Pakistan-focused partnerships, including one with HEC, have run in past cycles, so search the Trust's current listings for Pakistan before you submit (Cambridge Trust).
One rule catches many Pakistani applicants: the Cambridge Trust generally won't fund a degree at the same level as one you already hold. If you have an MS or MPhil from Pakistan and apply for a Cambridge MPhil, Gates may be your main funding route for that course.
Usama Javed Mirza graduated from LUMS in 2013, completed a master's at Teachers College, Columbia University on a Fulbright, and worked on science education policy in Pakistan. He won Gates Cambridge for a PhD in Education, researching how Pakistan's Single National Curriculum shapes what students learn about science and religion, and plans to return to education policy work at home (LUMS). Notice the pattern: strong academics, a precise research question tied to a real problem, and years of public-interest work behind it.
For 2027 entry, Gates Cambridge and the Cambridge Trust are the two big UK options still open to Pakistani applicants, and both use the same Cambridge application.
| Scholarship | Where you study | Levels | Funding | Status for 2027 entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gates Cambridge | Cambridge only | PhD, MLitt, one-year master's | Full cost | Open until 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027 |
| Cambridge Trust | Cambridge only | MPhil, MRes, LLM, MCL, MASt, PhD | Full or partial; most awards weigh financial need | Open; same funding deadline as your course; awards made February to July |
| Chevening | Most UK universities | One-year master's | Tuition, living costs and return flights | Closed on 6 October 2026 |
| Rhodes (Pakistan) | Oxford only | Master's, MPhil, DPhil | Fully funded; two places for Pakistan | Closed on 5 August 2026 |
If Cambridge isn't the right fit, browse other fully funded scholarships for Pakistani students or, for doctoral study in the US, the US-Pakistan PhD Scholarship 2027.
Most of these have nothing to do with ability. They're avoidable.
Skip Gates Cambridge if you only want an MBA, MFin, MASt or part-time master's; if you're a UK citizen with no other nationality; if you've already started the course you want funded; or if you're not a realistic candidate for admission to the course itself, since nomination comes from the department that admits you.
Starting in late October leaves about six weeks. If your course closes on 6 January, you have four more weeks of breathing room.
Add both deadlines to your CareersOz Deadline Calendar so a reminder reaches you before each one.
You can apply if you are a citizen of any country outside the UK and you are applying for an eligible postgraduate course at Cambridge (Gates Cambridge eligibility).
Pakistani citizens are eligible, and so are dual citizens of the UK and another country. If you're already studying at Cambridge, you can apply for a new degree, for example moving from an MPhil to a PhD. What you can't do is use Gates to fund the rest of a course you've already started.
Check this before you pay any application fee. The list below comes from the Gates eligibility page and FAQ.

| Business Doctorate (BusD) or Doctor of Education | No |
| PGCE, PGCert or PGDip | No |

A second master's is allowed, but you'll need a strong reason for it, and it's worth confirming with the department that the course suits you.
Gates sets no minimum GPA or CGPA. Academic excellence is judged across your whole application, and in practice you first need to be strong enough for your Cambridge department to admit you and then nominate you.
There's no Gates English test either, but the University has one. Pakistan isn't on the UK's list of majority English-speaking countries, so most Pakistani applicants will need IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, unless they recently finished a degree in a country such as the UK or USA. For most courses you send the result after you get an offer, and it must be dated no more than two years before your course starts. LLM and Master of Corporate Law applicants must include it when they apply (Cambridge English requirements).
Yes. Citizens of any country outside the UK can apply, including Pakistan. You must apply for an eligible PhD, MLitt or one-year full-time master's at Cambridge by your course's funding deadline.
Yes. It pays the University Composition Fee, a maintenance allowance of £23,152 for 12 months (2026-27 rate), one economy flight at the start and end of your course, inbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
It depends on your course: 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027 at 11:59pm UK time. In Pakistan, that's 4:59am on 9 December 2026 or 7 January 2027.
Gates has no English test of its own, but Cambridge does. Most Pakistani applicants will need IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, usually submitted after an offer and dated within two years of the course start.
No. Gates sets no minimum GPA. Academic excellence is judged across your transcripts, references and experience, and your department must first rate you highly enough to nominate you.
Gates doesn't require a confirmed supervisor. Cambridge does expect PhD and most research MPhil applicants to contact a potential supervisor while shaping their research proposal.
Up to seven in one cycle, each with its own Gates funding section. If you're nominated for more than one course, you'll be interviewed once, for the course you choose.
Yes, as long as it's a separate reference that focuses on the four Gates criteria rather than repeating the academic letter.
Around 70 worldwide. About two-thirds go to PhD students, and about a third are awarded in the US round. That leaves roughly 45 to 50 awards for applicants from the rest of the world.
Yes. An earlier unsuccessful application doesn't count against you. Gates doesn't give feedback, so ask a mentor to review your answers before you try again.
