Quick answer: The Yenching Academy Scholarship 2027 is a fully funded fellowship for Peking University's two-year Master's in China Studies. It covers tuition, on-campus housing, a monthly stipend, medical insurance, research costs and one round trip to Beijing. Graduates of any subject can apply. The deadline is 30 November 2026 at 9:00 AM Beijing time (6:00 AM in Pakistan).
You have about a month. Below is what the fellowship pays for, who is eligible and which documents you need. It also covers three details most pages get wrong for Pakistani applicants: the deadline in Pakistan time, the English waiver and the professor-rank rule for referees.
The scholarships team at CareersOz checked every fact below against the Yenching Academy's own guidelines for the September 2027 intake.
The whole programme fits in one table. Everything below it explains these rows in more detail.

The Yenching Academy of Peking University is an English-taught residential college that runs a two-year interdisciplinary Master's in China Studies. Its students are called Yenching Scholars, and every admitted scholar receives the Yenching Fellowship.
Its first cohort arrived in 2015. The name comes from Yenching University, whose old campus now forms the heart of Peking University.
"China Studies" here is not a language degree. It is a humanities and social science master's: you write your thesis in one of six research areas but can take courses across all of them.
The right area is the one where your research question lives. Here are examples of the kind of Pakistan–China topics that fit each one. They are ideas, not required topics.
| Research area | A topic a Pakistani applicant could explore |
|---|---|
| Politics and International Relations | How China's role as a mediator in South Asia has changed since 2015 |
| Economics and Management | Local hiring in CPEC special economic zones |
| Law and Society | How disputes in Chinese investment contracts in Pakistan get resolved |
| History and Archaeology | Gandhara Buddhism and the pilgrim Xuanzang's route through Taxila |
| Literature and Culture | Translating Urdu poetry into Chinese, and what gets lost on the way |
| Philosophy and Religion | How Confucian ideas of governance appear in Chinese public policy teaching |

Every admitted scholar is fully funded for the first year. The second year is funded too, but only if you apply for it, keep good grades and stay in Beijing.
The official list for year two does not include another flight, so budget for your ticket home yourself.
Yenching does not publish a fixed figure. You will see numbers on other websites, such as 3,000 yuan or about US$500 a month, but none of them come from the Academy. Treat them as estimates. If the amount decides whether you can go, email yca-admissions@pku.edu.cn and ask.
Budget note: The fellowship starts once you enrol. Costs before that are yours: the IELTS or TOEFL fee, the credential evaluation, the visa and your medical check.

If you are over 29 and established in your career, the Zhuoyue Scholarship is the Yenching route built for you. It is a Chinese Ministry of Education award, officially the Youth of Excellence Scheme of China, for applicants under 45.
In the 2026 cycle, you needed three or more consecutive years in one of these roles:
In Pakistan, that could mean a civil servant, a university registrar's office manager, or someone at a UN agency. You also need written permission from your employer to study full-time in Beijing for a year, which for government officers usually means an NOC.
The trade-off is time in China. Zhuoyue funds one academic year on campus. You then write and defend your thesis from outside mainland China in year two.
The process has two parts. Last cycle, candidates applied through the normal Yenching portal by the main deadline. Once pre-admitted, they completed a separate Chinese Government Scholarship application by 31 March. Yenching said details for the 2027 intake would follow around late October 2026, so check the official site now and submit your Yenching application by 30 November to be safe.

Most rejected applications are not weak. They break a rule the applicant didn't know about. These are the traps most likely to catch Pakistani applicants:
For more first-hand advice, read our tips from past scholarship holders.
Pros
Cons
Apply if you are a humanities or social science graduate with a real interest in China. It suits careers in diplomacy, think tanks, journalism, academia and China-facing business. Strong final-year students fit well, since the average new scholar is 23.
Think twice if you want an engineering, medical or other technical degree; the CSC route serves those far better. It is also a poor fit if you want a one-year programme, where Schwarzman fits better, or if you cannot spend the first year living in Beijing.
An offer starts a second, slower process: proving your degree and getting a student visa. Start it the week you accept.
Money tip from Pakistan's embassy in Beijing: carry some yuan for your first days. Rupees usually need converting to US dollars first, then to yuan.
Sources: Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing, student visa FAQ, Yenching 2027 guidelines.
You are eligible if you hold a non-Chinese passport and a bachelor's degree in any subject, or will have one by August 2027. The rest of the criteria are about quality: grades, interest in China, leadership and English.
Most Pakistani applicants apply directly through the Yenching portal. The exception: if you studied at a Yenching partner university abroad, such as SOAS in London, you must go through that university's internal nomination first.
There is no hard cut-off, but age matters in practice. The Academy's own 2027 guidelines say no one over 29 has been admitted outside the Zhuoyue track, and the average new scholar is 23. Some partner universities state a preference for 25 or younger, or 27 where military service is compulsory.
So ignore pages that list an age range of 18 to 35. If you are over 29 and working, look at the Zhuoyue route instead.
No minimum is published, so ignore sites that quote 3.7. The committee reads your full transcript. If your CGPA is modest, a rising trend, a strong thesis or research work can make up for it.
No. Chinese is not required to apply. Chinese Language is a compulsory core course once you arrive, taught at your level.

Non-native speakers need IELTS Academic 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100 or Cambridge English 185, unless their degree was taught in English. That is a higher bar than some pages suggest; IELTS 6 will not do.
| Test | Minimum overall score | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 | Must be taken after 1 September 2025 |
| TOEFL iBT | 100 | Institution code C488; taken after 1 September 2025 |
| Cambridge English (C1 Advanced) | 185 | Overall score on the Cambridge English Scale |
The testing organisation must send your score directly to "Yenching Academy of Peking University". A screenshot or PDF you upload yourself is not enough. All materials must arrive by the deadline, so the score has to land before 30 November too.
Often, yes. Native speakers and graduates of English-taught degrees are exempt. Most Pakistani universities teach in English, but the Academy needs proof from the university, such as a registrar's letter stating that English was the language of instruction.
Ask your registrar for this medium-of-instruction letter today, since some offices take a week or two. If your degree was taught partly in Urdu, take the test. Final-year students should email yca-admissions@pku.edu.cn to confirm that a current-student letter is accepted.
Warning: Yenching does not accept IELTS Online, IELTS One Skill Retake, IELTS Indicator, TOEFL iBT Home Edition or TOEFL MyBest scores. Book a test-centre IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, and book it early in November at the latest.

You need eight items, and two of them depend on other people: your referees and your university. Start with those.
| Document | Limit or rule | Tip for Pakistani applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Online application form | Completed on the Yenching portal | Spell your name exactly as it appears on your passport |
| Personal statement | 750 words maximum | Write it last, once your research statement is clear |
| Statement of Research Interest | 1,500 words maximum, citations not counted | Pick a narrow question you could actually answer |
| CV | 2 pages maximum | Build it in the CareersOz free CV Maker |
| Official transcripts | Official or university-certified copies only | Request them from your examinations office this week |
| Diploma or enrolment certificate | Final-year students upload an enrolment certificate | Ask for a letter showing your expected completion date |
| Two recommendation letters | Full or associate professors in your intended field | See the professor-rank rule below |
| English score or waiver proof | Score sent by the test body, or a registrar's letter | See the English section above |
The two essays do different jobs. The personal statement is about you: why China, why Yenching, and what you plan to do afterwards. The Statement of Research Interest is about an idea: a research question, the background and existing literature, and how you would study it.
The Academy says it uses the research statement to judge how you frame and write about academic topics. You are not tied to it as your thesis.
Pro tip: Many Pakistani applicants write about CPEC in broad terms, so the committee reads a lot of those essays. A narrow question stands out. Instead of "the impact of CPEC on Pakistan", try "How has Lahore's Orange Line metro changed commute times for women workers?"
This rule catches more Pakistani applicants than any other. Peking University only accepts letters from full or associate professors, or equivalent, in your intended field of study.
Pakistani universities use four main ranks: Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. Only the last two clearly qualify. If the teacher who knows you best is an Assistant Professor, ask an Associate Professor or Professor who taught you or supervised your project instead. If someone's title is unusual, email the admissions office before you ask them.
Letters can be in English or Chinese, on official letterhead, signed and in PDF. Referees upload them directly once you enter their emails in the portal, so give them at least three weeks.

The deadline is Monday 30 November 2026 at 9:00 AM Beijing time. Pakistan is three hours behind Beijing, so that is 6:00 AM in Pakistan. Treat Sunday night, 29 November, as your real deadline.
| When | Stage | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 September 2026 | Applications opened | The portal is open now |
| 30 November 2026, 6:00 AM Pakistan time | General deadline | Everything must arrive, including letters and test scores |
| 7 December 2026 | Deadline for partner-university nominees | Only applies if a partner university nominated you |
| December 2026 to March 2027 | Live video interviews | Invitations arrive about one week ahead |
| 18 January to 16 February 2027 | No interviews | Chinese winter break |
| Around April 2027 | Most decisions | Some offers go out earlier, on a rolling basis |
| Around late June 2027 | Formal admission documents | Needed for your visa |
| Late August 2027 | Registration at Peking University | Bring your physical diploma and credential evaluation |
| Early September 2027 | Programme starts | First year in Beijing |
Pro tip: Aim to submit by 25 November. Portals slow down in the final days, and a referee who uploads late can sink a finished application.
Add the date to the CareersOz deadline calendar so you get a reminder.

The application is online and takes about four weeks to do well. Work through these steps in order; the first three depend on other people, so start them today.
After you submit, start preparing for the interview. Invitations can arrive as early as December with only a week's notice.
Finalists get a live video interview between December and March, with about a week's notice. International applicants interview online, so you can do it from home in Pakistan.
The Academy does not publish its questions. Expect the conversation to test the same things the written application does: your academic thinking, your interest in China and your leadership. In practice, that means questions such as:
For more practice, browse the CareersOz interview preparation guides.
Very. The Academy does not publish an acceptance rate, but the numbers it does publish tell the story. About 120 scholars start each year, and roughly 75% are international, so around 90 places go to international applicants.
The Academy's 2027 guidelines also give a rough regional split for those places: about 30–35% Europe, 25–30% the US and Canada, and 30–35% the rest of the world. By our estimate, that leaves roughly 27 to 32 places a year for every applicant outside Europe, the US and Canada, from Pakistan to Brazil to Nigeria.
That is not a reason to skip it. It is a reason to apply with a sharp, specific application. A Pakistani perspective on China is a real asset when your research question uses it, rather than mentioning it in passing.
Ignore the "95% acceptance" claims. Some agency pages quote acceptance rates for their general admissions service. They have nothing to do with the Yenching Fellowship.

These are the three fully funded master's routes to China that Pakistani graduates ask about most. Yenching suits a two-year, research-led China degree; Schwarzman suits a one-year leadership programme; CSC suits almost any other subject.
| Yenching Academy | Schwarzman Scholars | Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| University | Peking University | Tsinghua University | Many Chinese universities |
| Degree | Master's in China Studies | Master's in Global Affairs | Master's in most subjects |
| Length | 2 years | 1 year | 2–3 years, plus language preparation if required |
| Teaching language | English | English | English or Chinese, by programme |
| Age | No hard limit; no one over 29 admitted so far | At least 18 and under 29 on 1 August of the start year | Under 35 for master's through HEC |
| English | IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 100, or a waiver | IELTS 7 or TOEFL 100, or two years of English-medium study | Set by each university |
| Places | About 120 a year, all applicants | Up to 200 a year, all applicants | 75 for Pakistanis through HEC in 2026–27 |
| Next deadline | 30 November 2026 | Global window April to September 2027 | HEC call usually opens around October; last deadline was 5 January 2026 |
Two money differences matter. Yenching pays one round trip to Beijing, while CSC does not pay flights at all. CSC pays master's students 3,000 yuan a month, whereas Yenching does not publish its stipend.
If you miss Yenching this year, Schwarzman's next global window opens in April 2027. It is a sensible second target with a similar profile.

Yes. The first year covers tuition, on-campus housing, a monthly stipend, basic medical insurance, research costs and one round trip to Beijing. Second-year funding is available if you apply for it and stay in Beijing.
Yes. Anyone with a non-Chinese passport and a bachelor's degree, or finishing one by August 2027, can apply. Pakistani applicants apply directly through the Yenching portal by 30 November 2026.
Yes, if your degree was taught in English and your university confirms it in writing, usually through a registrar's letter. Otherwise you need IELTS Academic 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100 or Cambridge English 185.
There is no hard limit. The Academy says no one over 29 has been admitted outside the Zhuoyue track, and the average new scholar is 23.
No minimum GPA is published. The Academy asks for an outstanding academic record and reads your full transcript.
