If you don't have a letter from a Swiss professor yet, this guide will most likely tell you to aim for next year. If you do have one, you have until 11:59 PM Swiss time on 31 October 2026, which is 3:59 AM on 1 November in Pakistan, and everything below is about using those days well.
That's the honest version. Most pages ranking for this scholarship repeat the same benefits table, some of it out of date, and squeeze the one requirement that decides who can apply into a single bullet point.
Short answer: The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2027–2028 fund Pakistani Master's holders for a PhD of up to three years or a 6–12 month research stay in Switzerland, paying CHF 2,450 a month plus health insurance. Pakistan's deadline is 31 October 2026, 11:59 PM Swiss time, on GO ESKAS. You need a Swiss professor's support letter first.
Every fact below was checked on 19 October 2026 against official sources: SERI, Switzerland's State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, and HEC Pakistan. Where something couldn't be confirmed, the article says so.
The Swiss Excellence Scholarships for foreign students run in 183 countries this year, but the deadline, the scholarship types and the contact office differ by country. These are Pakistan's, from SERI's official country list and the SERI scholarship page.

HEC Pakistan also published the call. Its announcement is clear that HEC only advertises this scholarship: you apply directly, and HEC carries no financial liability. [INTERNAL LINK: HEC scholarships open in 2026]
Several "Switzerland fully funded scholarships 2027" posts promise a tuition waiver. SERI's benefits section says the opposite: this scholarship does not cover tuition or semester fees.
What the FCS does pay, according to SERI:
Now the costs that stay with you. Where an institution charges semester fees or reduced tuition, SERI puts them at roughly CHF 600 to CHF 2,000 per semester, and some PhD fees aren't waived either. Conference travel is yours to fund. So is fieldwork: PhD holders can request up to six months of field research with no extra money, and research fellows can't do field research outside Switzerland at all.
Family is the hard one. There are no family allowances, and SERI describes the current policy on permits for accompanying family as restrictive, with no help from the FCS or the universities. If you're married, settle this at home before you apply, not after you win.
The CHF 2,450 figure is new. On 19 November 2025 the Federal Council raised it from CHF 1,920, a rate unchanged since 2006, with effect from 1 January 2026, and doubled the housing grant from CHF 300 to CHF 600 (SERI press release). The trade-off: fewer scholarships overall. Any page still quoting CHF 1,920 hasn't been updated since, so don't trust its deadline either.
One more money rule decides which professors will say yes. SERI notes that some universities, naming EPFL, ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, require extra funding from the academic supervisor. A yes from a professor there means they're also agreeing to top up your income. Build your list with that in mind, and don't skip the cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the four ETH Domain research institutes (PSI, WSL, Empa, Eawag), which are all eligible hosts.
Everything here comes from SERI's list of required application elements.
About HEC attestation: at least one ranking page claims every academic document must be HEC-attested before you apply. That requirement doesn't appear in SERI's official document list. Upload clear copies of what you have, and if you want certainty for your own file, ask the embassy in Islamabad. [INTERNAL LINK: HEC degree attestation process]
Some mistakes lower your score. These remove you from the competition outright, because SERI lists them as exclusion criteria:
That attempt limit deserves a second look. The FAQ allows three applications per scholarship type, so a half-ready file burns one of them. If your proposal isn't ready, a year's wait costs you less than a wasted attempt.
Three more aren't on SERI's list but do just as much damage.
Trusting the wrong deadline. Search results for the Swiss Government Scholarship 2027 in Pakistan show 29 September and 30 November alongside the real date. SERI's country list says 31 October 2026. Use that one.
A proposal and a supervisor letter that tell different stories. If your proposal describes one project and the letter describes something vaguer, the commission sees a supervisor who hasn't engaged with your work. Quality of supervision is a selection criterion, so the mismatch counts against you.
Paying anyone. The application is free. SERI's scholarship page warns about fake offers on email and social media that push victims into money transfers, dressed up as visa or social insurance costs. Don't reply to them and don't send money. [INTERNAL LINK: how to spot fake scholarship offers]
The Swiss scholarship application for 2027–2028 is online only. SERI's instruction is plain: nothing by email, nothing on paper. This is the order I'd work in.
SERI's country list sets every deadline at 11:59 PM Swiss local time. Switzerland leaves summer time on 25 October 2026, so on 31 October it runs four hours behind Pakistan. That puts the cut-off at 3:59 AM on Sunday 1 November in Islamabad.
Treat those hours as an emergency cushion, not a plan. And because 31 October is a Saturday, send any question for the embassy (islamabad.scholarships@eda.admin.ch) this week.
! Two scholarship types are open to Pakistani nationals in this round, per the SERI country list. Pick one. Applying for both gets you excluded.
This is the Swiss Government Research Scholarship for someone enrolled in a PhD outside Switzerland, young medical doctors included, who wants to spend 6 to 12 months on full-time research at a Swiss institution as part of that doctorate. No extensions. If your PhD is a formal cotutelle between a Swiss and a foreign university, this 12-month fellowship is the only type open to you.
These Swiss PhD Scholarships 2027–2028 are awarded for 12 months and renewed twice, up to 36 months, if your first-year progress holds up. SERI's FAQ expects your supervisor to help fund any time beyond that, up to one or two more years.
Both types need a Master's degree (MS/MPhil or equivalent) finished by 31 July 2027, or by 30 June 2027 for ETH Zurich. A student in the last semester of an MPhil can apply now, as long as the degree is done in time.
Not on Pakistan's list: art scholarships, which go to a limited group of countries, and anything at bachelor's or taught-master's level. If you came here searching for Swiss Postdoctoral Scholarships 2027, the answer is short. The Federal Council stopped awarding them from the 2027/28 academic year. Already hold a PhD? This programme has no category for you now.
SERI's own overview says "max. age: 35", and many sites copy it. The rule that gets checked is your date of birth, which must fall after 31 December 1991.
The difference is real. Someone born on 20 December 1991 is 34 on the day this was written, and not eligible. Someone born on 2 January 1992 is also 34 today, and eligible, even though they'll turn 35 before the scholarship starts.
Check your passport, not your age.
The FCS judges each application on your profile as a candidate, the quality of your research project, and the potential for future research cooperation with Switzerland (SERI). The detailed selection criteria add your motivation, the originality and method of the project, and the quality of supervision.
SERI's overview still describes applications as passing through Swiss diplomatic representations, and the embassy in Islamabad is Pakistan's listed contact. SERI's pages don't describe an interview stage for Pakistan this year, so don't plan around one either way.
Decisions arrive by the end of May 2027 at the latest. Scholarships start on 1 September 2027.
Winning doesn't enrol you. SERI notes that the PhD scholarship application and admission to a doctoral programme are separate procedures, so keep the university admission moving in parallel.
Not selected? You can apply again, within the three-attempt limit. The 2028–2029 call opens from August 2027.
If you hold a signed support letter, submit by 28 October and stop second-guessing the proposal.
If you don't, let the 2027–28 round go. With fewer awards on offer and only three attempts per scholarship type, a strong 2028–29 file beats a rushed one now, and it starts with the research proposal you'll send to professors in early 2027.
Whichever group you're in, your next step is the same: register on GO ESKAS today. A login problem found on 19 October is an inconvenience. Found on 31 October, it's the end of your application.
